Federal laws on people smuggling will force judges to send 216 Indonesian crewmen in immigration detention in Australia to jail for a total of at least 648 years.

But no one can say where the men will be accommodated or who will pay the tens of millions of dollars it will cost.

After the West Australian government objected earlier this year to paying the cost of jailing 119 mostly Indonesian crewmen, the Immigration Department sent 169 others to Darwin, where they are awaiting investigation by the Australian Federal Police or prosecution.
