We've turned back Taliban tide, says lying Petraeus

The American commander of international forces in Afghanistan says his troops have turned the tide on the Taliban's momentum, but he warns tough battles still lay ahead.

General David Petraeus also played down the prospect of a rapid withdrawal of US troops next year, repeating his insistence that the target of July 2011 set by President Barack Obama was only a ''date when a process begins''.

General Petraeus said the road ahead could be bloody but he insisted the nine-year campaign was making progress.

''The momentum that the Taliban have established over the course of recent years has been reversed in many of the areas of the country and will be reversed in the other areas as well,'' he told the BBC.
