A Filipino angry at being fired from the police force was holding hostage 15 tourists and their driver on a bus in downtown Manila on Monday.
Former Senior Inspector Rolando Mendoza, 55, who is armed with an M16 rifle and handguns, said that a "big deal" would happen after 3 p.m. local time (3 a.m. ET). However, the deadline passed without incident.
Complaint According to newspapers reports from 2008, Mendoza was among five police officers who had been charged with robbery, extortion and grave threats after a Manila hotel chef filed a complaint alleging the policemen falsely accused him of using drugs to extort money.
Mendoza demanded that he be given back his job on the police force, Magtibay said.
