| ONE of two soldiers killed on their first tour of Afghanistan was last night described as a loving father and role model who overcame medical problems to join the army.
Private Grant Kirby, a 35-year-old father of two girls from Brisbane, and 21-year-old Private Tomas Dale, of Reynella in South Australia, were both from the Brisbane-based 6th Battalion, Royal Australian Regiment. They were killed by a roadside bomb during an operation in the Baluchi Valley on Friday afternoon Australian time. Great loss... a Facebook picture of Grant Kirby (left) and Tomas Dale who have been killed in Afghanistan.
Private Kirby leaves behind daughters Isabella, 10, and Madeleine, 8, both of whom were trying to come to terms with news of his death. His former wife, Edwina, said: "While Grant and I were no longer married he was very much a part of our family - he was a dedicated father and my very close friend.
