Ivan the Terrible boosted its production, Mikhail Gorbachev restricted its sale, and Boris Yeltsin wandered the streets of Washington in his underpants trying to hail a cab to look for pizza after drinking too much of it.

Now authorities in Moscow have taken the latest steps in Russians' eternal and deadly dance with vodka.

They have announced a ban on the sale of spirits between 10pm and 10am, from September 1, the most recent of a series of measures designed to break Russia's drinking habit.

''We can only welcome this law,'' said Yevgeny Bryun, the Health Ministry's chief specialist on alcohol and drug addiction.
