The developer of Marrickville Metro wants to buy a road from the council and turn it into a private shopping plaza, in a major expansion of the inner west mall.

Council sources said a figure of $8 million has been discussed for the purchase of Smidmore Street, along the shopping centre's southern boundary, but that no formal offer has yet been made. However, a spokeswoman for the developer denied this figure was accurate.

The mall is looking ''tired'', according to the developer, AMP Capital Investors, which wants to double the retail space from 23,000 to 44,400 square metres, build an extension over Smidmore Street to house a discount department store and supermarket, and provide roof parking for 1815 cars.
