The Premier, Kristina Keneally, was forced to cut short a speech last night when a bomb scare forced the evacuation of guests at a business dinner at Sydney's Hilton Hotel.

Ms Keneally was talking to the annual dinner of the Australia-India Business Council when a message was passed to her. She immediately left the stage and a master of ceremonies said police had advised all guests to leave the building.

A spokesman for the Premier said Ms Keneally was taken to her office where she was waiting for police updates last night.

The hotel's general manager, Paul Hutton, said the telephone threat was not directed specifically at the Premier or the function. ''As happens unfortunately often,'' he said, ''it was a threat to the hotel.''
