An Iroquois nations team en route to tour England were stranded in New York last night because of a visa row between the United States and Britain.

The native Americans play lacrosse, a game they helped invent 1000 years ago and are due to take part in the world cup, but they are stranded because their Iroquois passports are no longer accepted by the US or Britain.

''We hope this gets resolved quickly,'' said Denise Waterman, a team spokeswoman. ''The great irony is that the game of lacrosse was founded by our people on Iroquois territory, so we hope others can respect the history and origins of the game and not impede our team.''
