European no-frills airline Ryanair said yesterday it would cut 15 per cent of its winter flights from Dublin and switch aircraft to countries with lower taxes and airport charges.

"Ryanair announced that its Dublin base this winter will be cut from 14 aircraft (2009) to 12 aircraft (in 2010) and Ryanair will operate less than 850 weekly flights from Dublin compared to 1,000 last winter," the carrier said in a statement.

"These aircraft will be switched to other EU countries which have reduced airport charges and scrapped government tourist taxes, whereas Ireland continues to lose visitors by imposing tourist taxes and raising airport charges."

The airline had already announced late last month that it would slash 16 percent of its British winter capacity because of high taxes and airport charges.

"Ireland and the UK are the only two European countries with a tourist tax," Ryanair chief executive Michael O'Leary told a press conference in Dublin on Thursday
