Victorian police 25 times more likely to escape a fine when they are caught speeding than members of the public, with new figures showing they are cautioned instead.

The figures, obtained under freedom-of-information laws by The Age, reveal more than half of all police who were caught speeding in police vehicles over the past two years had their fines replaced with ‘‘official warnings’’.

The revelations last night prompted Victoria Police to deny its members were above the law. It encouraged members of the public caught speeding to join police in applying for warnings if they were eligible.
