| LAWYERS have won over the state and federal governments in a vexed debate about who should control the profession under new national laws.
The federal Attorney-General, Robert McClelland, has indicated support for a lawyer-dominated board to set qualification and disciplinary standards for the profession, asking a government taskforce to consider the proposal by the Law Council of Australia and saying it has ''some merit''.
The NSW Attorney-General, John Hatzistergos, also said he supported the proposal in principle, provided stakeholders and other states and territories were given a say.
If adopted, the plan would give the governments three out of seven spots on the new National Legal Services Board, with solicitors, barristers and judges providing the rest.
