| Democracy in the Philippines is under siege because of the unabated killing of journalists, Chief Justice Reynato S. Puno said yesterday.
"It is a dangerous time for those who report the truth," Puno said during the opening of the International Conference on Impunity and Press Freedom at the Manila Peninsula Hotel in Makati City.
He lamented that "bullets fired at the direction of journalists pierce not only human flesh, but also our republican ideals."
Citing statistics, Puno said that since 1992, a total of 679 journalists have been killed worldwide, with the Philippines having the fifth highest number of incidents among countries where journalists have been murdered.
He pointed out that since 2001, 70 journalists have been killed in the line of duty in the Philippines.
"Of these cases filed as a result of these killings, only one has been resolved, six are undergoing trial, 18 are under investigation, four have been dismissed, and four are pending prosecution," he added.
