A man impersonating a disabled person tried to scam his way out of a speeding fine in Melbourne's inner north, but dropped the ruse when his prosthetic limb fell off to reveal his real right arm.

Police said the man, who was pleading for leniency after being caught speeding on Brunswick Road, Brunswick, was holding a disabled parking permit in his left hand as he approached the camera operator.

He also appeared to be sporting a prosthetic arm under the right-hand sleeve of his jumper.

But police said while asking the Department of Justice camera operator to waive the fine, the man fumbled the disabled permit and his prosthetic arm clattered to the ground.

According to the camera operator, he said "bugger it", pushed his fully able right arm through his jumper sleeve, gathered up the fake arm and permit and walked away.

Police said the incident took place during a traffic blitz involving five speed cameras on roads in the Moreland area between 11pm and 7am on Friday and Saturday night.

The blitz netted more than 1400 cars travelling up to 25 km/h over the limit.

Thirty four cars were caught speeding more than 25 km/h.

Other offenders included a 20-year-old Broadmeadows man who returned a breath test reading of more that 0.08 and another P-plater caught travelling at 121 km/h in a 60 km/h zone.

A 38-year-old Sunbury woman blew 0.149 and a 44-year-old man from Delahey blew 0.159.

"These results show us that some drivers think that we only work during the day and that it is a free road under the cloak of darkness," said Senior Constable James Bowen of Fawkner police.

"We hope that the penalty notices will inform them otherwise," he said.
