Germany stunned by massive tax evasion probe
BERLIN (AFP) - Germany faced Friday what was described as its biggest tax evasion probe ever after "hundreds" of people, including prominent figures, were said to have hidden assets in Liechtenstein.
The daily Sueddeutsche Zeitung said in editions to appear Saturday that some 3.4 billion euros (4.9 billion dollars) was involved.
"In a large number of cases, key personalities from our country sought to avoid their duty of solidarity via taxation by practising fiscal evasion to Liechtenstein," a finance ministry spokesman told a press conference here.
The Sueddeutsche Zeitung quoted judicial sources as saying officials were looking at around 700 suspects and had already prepared 900 search warrants.

US tax authorities say they are looking into more than 100 accounts held by Americans in tax haven Liechtenstein.
At least nine nations are now examining tax evasion related to the tiny Alpine principality after a massive investigation by German prosecutors.
The probes are believed to be based on data from an informant, a former employee of Liechtenstein's LGT Bank.
The US announcement came as Germany widened its investigation to a second bank in Liechtenstein.
'No hiding place'
German prosecutors said the homes and offices of 150 suspects had been raided and trusts worth 200m euros (£150m) were being examined.
"It should be clear from recent events that there is no safe hiding place for the proceeds of tax avoidance and evasion," said Linda Stiff, the acting commissioner of the US Internal Revenue Service, according to a statement quoted by the AFP news agency.
"Anyone with hidden income and gains would be well-advised to make a prompt and complete disclosure to the Internal Revenue Service," Ms Stiff said.

TWENTY wealthy Australians are being investigated by the Tax Office for tax evasion after squirreling between $200,000 and millions of dollars each in secret bank accounts in the tax haven of Liechtenstein.
A number of raids have already been conducted and notices to produce information issued, the Tax Office said yesterday.
The normally secretive banking world of Liechtenstein, a small nation between Austria and Switzerland, is in the international spotlight after German authorities paid more than $6 million to a former employee of its largest bank for a stolen DVD containing the details of secret bank accounts held by more than 1000 wealthy international clients.
The source, Heinrich Kieber, is reported to have been posing as a woman at the time of the transaction and to have fled to Australia fearing retribution from those he exposed.
German authorities, which this month conducted raids on dozens of private homes including a top chief executive and four politicians, have offered to share details of the bank accounts contained on the DVD with any interested foreign government.
British tax authorities had already paid more than $200,000 for the bank details of 100 of Britain's richest families thought to be listed on the DVD.
The Australian Commissioner of Taxation, Michael D'Ascenzo, said his office had a policy of not confirming its sources and that the Australian investigations into tax avoidance had been under way well before the German raids.
He said the investigations were part of a broader crackdown by the Tax Office on rich Australians seeking to avoid paying taxes by hiding money in several offshore tax havens.
It is offering amnesty through reduced penalties for people who voluntarily disclose offshore bank accounts. The Tax Office has already received 425 submissions as a result, disclosing $17 million in income from offshore activities.
Mr D'Ascenzo urged others with hidden incomes to come forward before it was "too late", warning they would otherwise face "the full force of the law".
He said: "This is a good example to people who may have hidden income in all sorts of places offshore that really it might not be as hidden as you think."
The Tax Office's second commissioner for compliance, Jennie Granger, described the German investigations as "parallel and separate" from the Australian cases.
However, some of the Australian cases involved accounts with the same bank in Liechtenstein.
Five out of the 20 cases under investigation had made voluntary disclosures about their activities, which were being considered by the Tax Office.
Australia has signed a tax treaty with Germany that allows for the exchange of information.
Tax administrators in Canada, France, Italy, New Zealand, Sweden, Britain and US are also working together to identify accounts being used for tax evasion in Liechtenstein.
The chief executive of Taxpayers Australia, Tony Greco, said the revelation would help entice fuller disclosure from wealthy Australians with bank accounts offshore.
"There is very much a high focus on international banking transactions," he said. "People have been asked to forward individually their interests in offshore accounts. Some have. Some haven't.
"This is going to put more pressure on those who haven't."
