AN INDEPENDENT investigation has been launched after two boys were seriously hurt in a police pursuit, just days after the Premier approved a review of the state's chase laws.

A 16-year-old was in a critical condition in hospital yesterday and a 13-year-old seriously injured after the pursuit in Bathurst on Friday night.

Police said that about 11.45pm, officers in Suttor Street saw a red 1985 Toyota Corolla, which had been reported stolen, allegedly speeding.

''When the vehicle failed to stop as directed, a short pursuit was initiated, lasting less than a minute before the Corolla left the road and struck a power pole in Rocket Street,'' a statement said.
