A WOMAN who sued her former husband over incidents of domestic violence has been awarded almost $200,000 in damages.

In a case described by a law professor as ''very unusual'', Sarah Jane Morris sued Nishantha Karunaratne, alleging deceit, assault and battery.

The couple, who both are doctors, married in 2002 and lived in Birchgrove, then Hunters Hill.

The District Court heard that before they were engaged, she confronted him about rumours he was violent towards his first wife. He denied it - falsely, she alleged.

Dr Morris claimed she relied on this false representation when agreeing to marry him and, as a result, suffered ''damage through exposure to prolonged domestic violence''.
