FRED NILE'S Christian Democratic Party is in crisis following a disastrous showing at the Bradfield byelection, which has led to its campaign director facing expulsion, the resignations of its lead candidate and a high-profile deputy president, and a barrage of criticism from mainstream church groups.

''The Bradfield byelection caused serious damage to our integrity in the community,'' the party's acting state manager, Graham Freemantle, told the Herald. ''God said we are supposed to be 'salt and light'. Our saltiness has been severely diminished. It's a very embarrassing time for us.''

Much of the damage has been caused by a controversial ''survey'' that was circulated to 36,000 people before the byelection which asked inflammatory questions such as whether the Federal Government should have the power to deport Muslims and if there should be a ban on new mosques and Islamic schools.
