A 52-year-old man who had sex with a 15-year-old-girl placed in his care by Victoria's Department of Human Services ran away with the teen when authorities became aware of the relationship, a court has heard.

The teenager became pregnant but later miscarried, the Victorian County Court heard today.

Robert McNair was jailed for five years with a minimum of three years after pleading guilty to two counts of sexual penetration of a child under the age of 16.

Judge Susan Pullen said the troubled teen had been living in a tent before the Department of Human Services placed her in McNair's care.
