| SAN SEBASTIAN, Spain (AFP) — Spain's northern Basque region was rocked by urban violence, demonstrations and a strike Thursday in protests against a crackdown on separatist parties ahead of general elections.
Police said 25 militants, some of whom had blocked main roads, were detained over the unrest in the Basque Country and in the neighbouring region of Navarra.
Several thousand people marched through the Basque city of San Sebastian shouting slogans against the Madrid government and the arrest of members of Batasuna, the political wing of the armed Basque separatist group ETA.
"In-de-pen-den-cia!", the crowd shouted.
"There is no future for this country with these methods, the government is launching a show of force and is only showing its weakness," said Rafael Diez, the leader of the LAB union that called a general strike and which is close to Batasuna.
