A junior police officer needs plastic surgery after being bitten on the face by a German shepherd in western Sydney yesterday.

The probationary constable, in her first year out of the police academy, was attacked at a house in Siandra Avenue, Shalvey, about 2pm, police said.

She was there with a male constable to serve documents on a man who lived at the house.

Chief Inspector Wayne McMahon told the ABC the suspect was not at home but four dogs were there.

The two officers went around the side of the house, which was sealed by a steel fence, Chief Inspector McMahon said.

"While [they were] observing the premises, a large German shepherd dog launched itself unexpectedly at the female officer and grabbed her on the nose, which caused a severe laceration to the bridge of her nose and two smaller marks just near her eye," he said.

The officer was treated there for cuts to her face but was taken to Mount Druitt Hospital.

She was later transferred to Auburn Hospital where she will undergo plastic surgery.
