YaY! Former Washington mayor arrested for stalking

The controversial former mayor of the US capital Marion Barry was arrested on the nation's independence day for allegedly stalking a woman in Washington, the US Park Police say.

Barry, 73, was detained on Saturday night in southeast Washington, which he currently represents as a city councilman, after a woman flagged down a police officer on patrol and complained that a man in a car was stalking and harassing her.

"As a result of the interview (by police of the suspect), the guy the complainant identified was placed under arrest, and he turned out to be Marion Barry," US Park Police public information officer Sergeant David Schlossersaid on Sunday.

The stalking charge is a misdemeanor, and Barry is due to appear in court later this week, Schlosser said.

The arrest is the latest in a string of notorious legal and criminal problems for the controversial Barry, who first served as mayor from 1979 to 1991 and then again from 1995 to 1999.

Mayor Barry was infamously caught on videotape smoking crack cocaine in 1990 in a hotel just blocks from the White House, and served six months in prison before ultimately returning to the city's top job.

He has also been the subject of Internal Revenue Service investigations and in 2006 was sentenced to three years probation for failing to pay income taxes.

Earlier this year a prosecutor, arguing that Barry's probation should be revoked, said the ex-mayor had failed to file his taxes in eight of the previous nine years.
