It’s with a sense of amusement that one reads the hysterical responses to the Empty Home Tax initiative and their unsurprisingly repeating hyperbolic falsehoods — as if the EHT, as a trojan horse, is coming for your property, mandating inspections, with government squashing your freedoms and jail time for noncompliance. All false. These views are right from the scare-monger playbook of fake-news extremist Republicans, the profit-obsessed real-estate industry, and Fox-news libertarians in thrall to billionaires, with their local counterparts happy to see rents skyrocket within deregulated markets, criminalizing those who lose their housing, and red-baiting any tax program offering a modicum of economic justice for working people. Truly unjust are investment properties sitting vacant while our extremely rent-burdened community faces nearly non-existent low-income affordable housing options. The EHT will mitigate that reality, offering a principled tool to help create a more inclusive, diverse city.
