| Front and centre in Badiucao’s exhibition, opening on Thursday in Melbourne, is a portrait of Dr Li Wenliang, who sounded the alert about the coronavirus. The 34-year-old had messaged his university alumni to warn them about a SARS-like illness, the very disease that would later kill him.
The show is part of the Can’t Do Tomorrow Festival, a celebration of street art, which by its very nature has always been political.
Badiucao says he wanted to memorialise Li’s bravery in speaking out. “He’s not a whistleblower like Julian Assange or Chelsea Manning. Initially he just told his close friends,” he says. "Before he died, Li said ‘A healthy society should not just have one voice’.”
