U.S. Board Should Seek Facial Recognition Halt, Groups Say

A U.S. privacy oversight board should recommend that federal agencies stop using facial recognition technologies until it examines risks of the tool in public spaces, privacy and consumer groups said.
“Obvious problems with bias and discrimination in the systems” show the need for a moratorium, 40 organizations wrote in a letter to the Privacy and Civil Liberties Oversight Board.
The letter adds to the push by lawmakers, civil libertarians, and others to slow the growing use of facial recognition and other biometric technologies by government agencies and companies.
