Kerry Douglas McKennon is an actor and liberty advocate who has represented the Libertarian Party on Texans’ ballots a few times in the past. Now, he’s taking on arguably his biggest campaign yet, running for the Libertarian nomination for U.S. Sen. John Cornyn’s seat.
McKennon ran for Lieutenant Governor in 2018, earning about 2 percent of the vote statewide. Meanwhile, a few races above McKennon, the Libertarian Party’s nominee for the U.S. Senate, Neal Dikeman, earned less than 1 percent of the vote in the marquee contest that also featured Republican Ted Cruz and Democrat Beto O’Rourke. While the Democrats are assembling a large field of perspective challengers for Cornyn and Cornyn himself is pulling in big bucks ahead of the 2020 contest, McKennon is confident he can be a real factor for liberty voters in the race. The Panhandle native points to his discussions with Libertarian voters prior to entering the contest as a source of excitement for the liberty movement in the 2020 race.
“We were looking at the Texas Senate race and we started talking to supporters and volunteers and they wanted someone who would be a good, solid Libertarian in the race,” McKennon said.
Looking at the issues, McKennon said while he is going to promote issues traditionally heralded by Libertarian candidates, he also wants to talk about issues that go under the radar in regular elections.
“Are we always going to be pro-cannabis? Yes,” McKennon said. “Pro-gun? Yes. But, what are some issues that we don’t hear other candidates talking about? How about the VA and veterans.”
On the matter of healthcare for veterans, McKennon says he wants to make sure those who served the country are receiving quick and quality access to healthcare, to avoid issues with overall bureaucracy.
“They are so crowded and there is such a waiting period that individuals are self-medicating and getting into even more trouble,” McKennon said. “The fact is we need to look at that.”
McKennon also says he wants to look at reforming the immigration system, saying the the issues should be approached from a view of compassion, and not with a goal of “raising your vote totals.”
“It’s not about getting votes,” McKennon said. “It’s a humanitarian issue and it is about compassion and helping our fellow man.”
McKennon is presently raising funds to qualify for his spot on the ballot as he seeks the Libertarian Party’s nomination. If you would like to donate in support of McKennon’s campaign, or to find out more about the candidate, you are asked to visit
