| NSW will embark on a radical new plan to save threatened species by building special “exclosures” in national parks, including near Sydney, the state’s Energy and Environment Minister Matt Kean has said.
Mr Kean pledged to reverse native animal declines, starting with 17 mammals that have become extinct in NSW but survive elsewhere, by building fenced-off sanctuaries in national parks. Targeted animals include the greater bilby, the bridled nailtail wallaby and the western quoll.
Mr Kean said he was preparing legislation to strengthen legal protections for those sanctuaries, “almost creating a new status of national parks”.
“There’s a priority to have one near Sydney,” Mr Kean said, adding there were many candidates, from Ku-ring-gai Chase to the Royal National Park, among others.
