As the demand for recycled goods continues to shrink, the financial burden on cities that recycle is also increasing. This increased cost could cause some Michigan localities to consider abandoning recycling programs altogether because of its inefficiency.
Because the Chinese economy is slowing down, the country is now purchasing fewer recycled paper and plastic goods from the United States. China is also finding that much of the recycled material is contaminated and unusable. The high reduction of imports is making some programs hard to afford.
For example, the city of Westland, in Southeast Michigan, saw its costs increase from $18 per ton to $80 per ton. Although Mayor William Wild began sending the recyclables to a waste-to-energy incinerator in Detroit, the city council voted the practice down and they are now simply sending recyclable goods to the landfill.

Recycling is nonsense. Consumes more energy than is saved.
