A New York Times/CBS News poll found 22 percent of respondents approved of George W. Bush's performance in two terms as president, the Times said Friday.

Just 17 percent rated Bush's performance during the last eight years as very good or good, and 83 percent said his job performance has been average or poor, the newspaper said. Seventy-three percent said they disapproved of Bush's performance during his two terms in office.

The 22 percent approval rating matched the lowest rating of Bush's presidency.

Former presidents Ronald Reagan and Bill Clinton left office with 68 percent job approval ratings in the New York Times/CBS News poll. Former President George H.W. Bush had a 58 percent job-approval rating when he left office and former President Jimmy Carter's rating was 44 percent.

The outgoing president, who leaves office Tuesday, got particularly low marks from poll respondents on his handling of the economy and the war in Iraq, with 77 percent disapproval on the economy and 71 percent negative rating on the war.

His strongest public support came on his handling of terrorism. Forty-seven percent approved while 48 percent disapproved.

In a Gallup poll released Wednesday, Bush had a 34 percent approval rating, while 61 percent disapproved.

The New York Times/CBS News poll was conducted by telephone from Jan. 11-15, with a sample of 1,112 adults and a margin of sampling error of plus or minus three percentage points.
