A hunter was hospitalised in a serious condition after shooting himself in a Boxing Day accident.

Auckland Westpac Rescue Helicopter said the man had been hunting on an isolated farm in Helensville, north of Auckland, with a friend.

"He was stowing the gun in a ute, believing it to be unloaded, when it went off and shot him in the leg," the statement said.

"St John ambulances were called initially, but given the rugged remoteness of the area, road vehicles were unable to gain access, so the helicopter was called."
