Signs of looting are present when first arriving at the site, before an active security presence.

I noticed that I hadn't come across a single wallet with money, or a mobile phone or a camera. They've all mysteriously gone missing.

A group of 10 separatist soldiers are situated slightly off from the crash site, but they aren't interacting with anyone and there wasn't anyone interacting with them.

Personal items, souvenirs and miscellaneous objects are strewn across the field, ranging from a Paris photo frame to an ''I love Amsterdam'' T-shirt, an unopened life vest, a Minnie Mouse lunchbox, oxygen masks, a holiday memoir, autobiographies by famous English football managers, a Winnie the Pooh teddy bear, a few Malaysian guidebooks written in Dutch and a Bali and Lombok guidebook.

Twisted wreckage and mangled bodies lie as they landed, uncollected personal effects lie strewn across the fields and bodies have still not been covered – open to the elements.
