| Bar owners on Sydney's Oxford Street are petitioning the state government to reverse lockouts and ''last drinks'' laws that they say are responsible for a decline in trade of up to 40 per cent.
Some pubs and nightclubs along the strip have cut opening hours and staff, with many patrons of the famous gay district and night-time party spot opting to stay home or go elsewhere.
''It's devastating,'' Shadd Danesi, owner of the popular Arq nightclub near Taylor Square, said. ''We're down probably about 30 to 40 per cent.''
Like many clubs, peak hour at Arq used to arrive after 2am. But the 1.30am lockout and 3am last drinks rule, introduced in February in response to public debate about alcohol-related violence, have upended that business model.
