| Eastern diet that includes raw fish, green tea and no dairy, a key indicator for older age
Ladies, if you're keen to extend your life expectancy, take a leaf or two from the recipe books of our Japanese sisters: it's all in the diet Research from the Office of National Statistics in the UK shows that a diet rich in wholegrains, high in green tea, raw fish, vegetables and soy contributes to the longer lives of Japanese women. Japanese females live for an average of 86.4 years, compared to their British counterparts, who can expect to live to anywhere from 80.7 to 82.8 years.
This diet can help people add years to their lives by better protecting against chronic disease, such as cancer, dementia and heart disease. And it's not just the bread and dairy-free diet - small serving sizes of quality produce and the use of chopsticks (which slow down eating) could also be contributing factors. Still cynical? Keep this in mind: Japan has 51,000 people over 100 years of age.
Craig Wilcox, a leading gerontologist, told The Times that the Japanese diet is full of disease-fighting foods.
He said: “They eat threes servings of fish a week, on average. Plenty of whole grains, vegetables and soy products too, more tofu and more konbu seaweed than anyone else in the world, as well as squid and octopus, which are rich in taurine – that could lower cholesterol and blood pressure.”
Interestingly, the same can't be said for Japanese men whose life expectancy is nearly seven years less than Japanese women. This could be due to a working and drinking culture which is similar to the West, and a high use of tobacco.
