| Speaking of the parlous state of the national budget that we can afford not to ask the wealthy to contribute to, treasurer Joe Hockey has had a little meeting with state treasury representatives to let them know that they'd better start selling off whatever assets they have left if they want to keep afloat in the post-mining-boom economy.
"It is understood Mr Hockey floated the idea of providing Commonwealth incentive payments and co-investments to states willing to undertake the politically fraught process of asset sales" explained the SMH, because saying "the Treasurer implied that the states had better privatise their ports if they fancy getting any commonwealth dollars" makes these negotiations sound a wee bit more like extortion.
So, to recap: we don't have any public money, but also don't need to raise any public money, but we need to save public money by getting rid of assets the public have paid for. Class war, shmas shmoar.
