The Supreme Court is joining Facebook and launching a website with live videos and retired judges' blogs in a bid to preserve the concepts of open justice and a fair trial in the digital age.

Chief Justice Marilyn Warren said on Monday that the concept that justice must be done and seen to be done was a "fundamental tenet of Australian democracy."

"Open justice now increasingly means the ability of the community to access information about the courts is through the internet and social media," she said, delivering the Redmond Barry lecture at the State Library.

Chief Justice Warren said that the public could also watch video "on demand", download judgments and leave comments on the news section of the website.
