Detainees' lives are at risk because there is no national tally of deaths in immigration custody, and researchers warn the lack of data means lessons from past tragedies cannot be learnt.

In national deaths-in-custody statistics published by the Australian Institute of Criminology in May there were no figures on deaths in immigration custody.

Researchers from the Border Crossing Observatory at Monash University and a paralegal specialising in coronial inquests say they have independently verified more than 50 people who have died in the custody of immigration officials since 2000.

It is a blindspot that criminologists say is costing lives because of the lack of nationally available data.
