| Subject: $100m heroin haul: Thieving OZschwitz Navy intercepts ship Tue Apr 02, 2013 7:07 pm | |
| The Australian Navy has made one of its biggest drug seizures at sea, intercepting a ship allegedly carrying half a tonne of heroin worth an estimated $100 million.
The Australian-led combined task force seized the alleged heroin haul at an undisclosed location in the Indian Ocean, off the coast of Zanzibar Island, Tanzania, last Friday. It is believed the ship was carrying the drugs to Europe.
The ship, which was flying an unidentifiable flag, was tracked overnight before heavily armed defence personnel boarded it and allegedly found 500 bags of the drug.
A Department of Defence statement on Tuesday said HMAS Toowoomba worked in conjunction with Canadian warship HMCS Toronto, tracking and boarding suspected drug smuggling ships in the region. Advertisement
Australian Commander, Commodore Charles McHardie, said the seizure was another step towards ensuring a secure maritime environment, while further depleting terrorism's finances.
"We had HMCS Toronto operating in the area after receiving some intelligence that suggested a small vessel that we had been tracking off the Pakistani coast some two weeks before was now tracking towards the east African coast," he said.
