FIFTY highway patrol cars will be fitted with high-tech devices to uncover illegal mobile radar detectors.

Police Minister David Campbell said the anti-detector devices, costing $4000 each, would be a valuable addition in the fight against speeding drivers.

"Radar detectors have been banned in NSW since 1987 yet some motorists seem to believe they can install them in their vehicles," Mr Campbell said. "Motorists should be reminded that it is illegal to sell or offer for sale a prohibited speed-measuring evasion article.

"It is also illegal to drive a [vehicle] which is fitted with or that carries a speed-measuring evasion article."

Motorists can be fined more than $1000 and lose nine demerit points if they are found to have one of the illegal devices in their vehicles.

"I can't understand the logic of drivers who want to put their own lives at risk as well as the lives of their passengers and fellow road-users," Mr Campbell said.

He said the sophisticated radar detection devices would initially be deployed to the northern, southern and western police regions.
