More than 800 NSW motorists have landed fines of up to $350 each after being caught using their mobile phones while driving in a 24 hour police crackdown.

Police says they busted 796 for drivers talking or texting on their phones during Operation Compliance on Wednesday.

They also issued 350 infringement notices for offences relating to school speed zones and children's crossings.

Acting Highway Patrol and Traffic Command Operations Manager, Acting Superintendent Phil Brooks, said police would continue to target motorists who used mobile phones in the car.

"For police to catch 1146 motorists using their mobile phones and misbehaving around schools in just 24 hours is very concerning," he said in a statement.
