IN MOST parts the frozen Tumen River that snakes through hundreds of kilometres of the North Korea-China border is less than 50 metres wide.

At no more than a 30-second slippery scramble to the other side, it presents a tempting prospect for potential North Korean defectors, were it not for the guards hiding in the bushes, the landmines, and recriminations for family left behind.

But there are still plenty desperate enough to try to escape the impoverished nation. Three would-be defectors were gunned down trying to cross the Yalu River further south last week.
