A policeman was injured after bystanders pelted him with bottles and a can of paint as he arrested a man suspected of damaging a vehicle.

Police were called to Nyan Way, Warrawong, on the NSW South Coast, about 6.30pm yesterday after a car was damaged.

A short time later, they confronted a 25-year-old Warrawong man, who was carrying a knife, in nearby Wegit Way.

The man dropped the knife and then ran and jumped over a fence into a backyard, police said.

Police pursued the man and caught him, a police spokeswoman said. However, he resisted arrest and spat on officers, she said.

Neighbours threw bottles and a can of paint at the officers, injuring one on the leg.

The man was subdued with capsicum spray, but onlookers tried to prevent the officers from taking the man from the backyard, police said.
