INCREASES in jail time for certain criminals, caused by alterations to NSW sentencing laws, have been condemned after an independent review showed increases of up to 60 per cent in the length of sentences.

The Judicial Commission of NSW's report, released yesterday, found the introduction of standard non-parole periods had increased the guilty plea rate for relevant crimes from 78.2 per cent to 86.1 per cent.

Under the laws, introduced during campaigning for the 2003 election, the median full term of sentences for people convicted of wounding with intent increased by 60 per cent, from five to eight years.

The median non-parole period more than doubled.
