Deputies from the Montcalm County Sheriff's Office say they have arrested a 41-year-old man from Greenville on numerous charges stemming from an incident in a court room Wednesday.

Deputies say that around 10:00 am Wednesday morning, a Montcalm County Court Security Officer was requested to respond to district court to take a suspect into custody on a contempt of court charge. As the man was taken to the court lock-up room he struggled with the officer and was able to flee through the door into the court room.

In the court room, the man was stopped by an assistant Montcalm County prosecutor and a state corrections officer who was serving as a juror at the time. When the man was let up to be taken into custody he again fled on foot. Deputies say the court officer tazed the man to no effect, and he was able to flee to the front door where he was confronted by another court officer who maced him as he ran through the front doors into the parking lot.

Deputies say once in the parking lot, the man got into a van and locked the doors as officers approached. The suspect started the van and as he backed out of the parking spot officers approached the van, broke out the drivers side window and deployed another tazer.

Deputies say the van in question belonged to a friend of the suspect who had driven him to his court hearing, but had no connection with the escape.

The suspect was able to leave the parking lot and headed onto southbound M-66.

The vehicle was spotted by the Chief of the Stanton Police Department, who pursued the vehicle down back roads at speeds approaching 80 miles an hour, heading south west towards Greenville.

Deputies say that Michigan State Troopers were able to slow the vehicle on Peck Road between M-91 and Vining Road by deploying stop sticks. However, the suspect was within a short distance of his home, in the 8000 block of Peck Road and was able to drive up to his house and barricade himself inside.

Contact with the suspect was attempted without success. Deputies say they made entry to the home with a group of four officers and a K-9 team, at which time the suspect fled the home into a pole barn where he had started a 1971 Dodge motor home.

Officers say the man drove the motor home through the closed garage door as they attempted to stop him, hitting several police cruisers in the process

Police finally forced him off the road west of M-91 and tazed him for a third time.
