| Subject: Putting ice on injuries could be doing more damage than good Sun Oct 13, 2019 7:51 pm | |
| If you've rolled an ankle, you know what comes next: sickening, nauseating pain. And then a big bag of frozen peas.
Ice, plus a compression sock, rest and sticking your leg on a stack of pillows, is the standard treatment for strains, sprains and bruises, prescribed by physios and paramedics, and used by weekend warriors and elite athletes alike.
That mystifies injury researchers. They have known for a long time that there is almost no evidence that ice helps you get better faster. Some now suspect an ice pack may actually slow down the body’s own natural healing mechanisms and delay recovery. And compression and elevation for ankle injures have almost never been tested to see if they help.
