| Subject: Idiot: British envoy to NZ weeps as she voices 'regret' for Cptn Cook's crew killing Maoris 250 years ago Wed Oct 02, 2019 9:15 pm | |
| Britain's envoy to New Zealand broke down in tears as she met a Maori leader yesterday and expressed regret that Captain Cook's crew killed their ancestors when they landed 250 years ago.
High commissioner Laura Clarke was overcome with emotion after acknowledging the 'pain' Cook's men had caused by killing some of the first indigenous people they encountered on the island.
Wiping tears away from her face, Ms Clark told elders in the town of Gisborne yesterday: 'To you, as the descendants of those killed, I offer my every sympathy.'
Nine Maori, including a local leader, were killed in the days after Cook landed in New Zealand in 1769.
