| A top Thai politician has changed his story on his jail time in Sydney for a drug trafficking conviction, as Australian authorities dodge questions about whether he would ever be granted a visa.
A newly appointed senior Thai government minister who has played down the extent of his criminal past spent four years in a Sydney jail in the 1990s after pleading guilty to conspiracy to import 3kg of heroin.
Under pressure over revelations in the Herald and The Age that he spent four years in a Sydney jail for conspiracy to import 3.2kg of heroin, government enforcer Thammanat Prompao told the Thai Parliament he spent eight months in lock-up but the rest of the four years in “state-sponsored accommodation” as a witness.
Previously the newly appointed cabinet minister said he spent eight months in custody and then lived “a normal life” for four years working for a local sanitary company.
His opponents seized on an apparent contradiction when Thammanat again denied pleading guilty then said he entered a plea-bargaining arrangement.
