Fresh from its long-awaited Le Mans win, Toyota has confirmed it is building its first hypercar.

Based on the GR Super Sport Concept revealed at the Tokyo Auto Salon in January the new supercar will be powered by a version of the race-winning TS050 petrol-electric powertrain.

That means a combination of a 2.4-litre twin-turbo V6 petrol engine and powerful electric motor that produces 735kW and drives all-four wheels for maximum traction.

Shigeki Tomoyama, president of Gazoo Racing Company, said the project is designed to link the company’s on-track success with its push for more exciting and dynamic road cars.
