| One of the most trying things about a cancer diagnosis isn't, surprisingly, the cancer. You can somehow compel yourself to handle all the doctors' appointments, all the prodding and poking and scanning and testing. That stuff, while overwhelming, can actually be endured. Less tolerable, and yet much more trivial, are the clichés – and gee is there a ton of those to overcome.
Medical clichés have two things in common. The first is they're well meaning. No one intends harm when they assure "you will get through this"; when they offer to "fight this together"; when they assert "this journey will make you stronger".
