| Queensland police want to take a more active role in school-based drug education to paint a stigma on illicit drug use in the way the anti-tobacco lobby has targeted cigarettes.
A formal approach has not yet been made to Education Queensland, but the ABC has been told the Queensland Police Service believes this could be a powerful new front in its fight against dangerous drugs.
It comes as the latest Queensland research on crystal methylamphetamine, or ice, indicates shutting down about 900 backyard laboratories in the past three years has had no effect on the drug's availability or price.
Police statistics show the state's drug squad is on track to notch up about 250 illegal lab closures by the end of this financial year.
That comes after 340 lab closures in Queensland the previous financial year and 330 the year before that.
