| Public school principals will crack down on family holidays during term time with new rules stating students will be allowed to miss school only if they are competing in elite sport, arts or in the entertainment industry.
The NSW Department of Education's new attendance policy says most family trips outside school holidays will now count as an "unjustified" absence on a student's permanent record.
Parents who still insist on taking their children out of school will need to to submit an itinerary and copies of plane tickets to the principal, along with a justification of the benefit of their trip.
A spokesman for the department said the change, which removes "family holidays and travel" as a formal reason for a child being absent, was to ensure students were at school "every day they are able".
