| The Boston Taxi Driver's Association wants Uber to be shut down throughout the city.
Claiming that the app-based car service has an unfair advantage over local taxis, "The organization represents more than 1,400 cab drivers and is arguing that an unregulated taxi service like Uber poses a serious public safety threat because drivers are not vetted by the city before they are allowed to pick up fares," reports Boston.com. "In order to make the requested changes, the BTDA is citing a rule that gives Boston’s police commissioner the authority to alter the city’s taxi regulations 'to promote public well-being, convenience, safety, and to respond to the changing needs of the industry.'"
Currently, Uber holds customers' credit card numbers on file as payment. Users who request an Uber vehicle are asked to rate their experience post-service to regulate the safety of the company's drivers. If the driver falls below four stars, they face being shut-off from future clients.
The BTDA spearheaded a "rolling rally" at Uber's headquarters in Boston on May 22. The Uber app has reportedly cut taxi business in the city by 30 percent since it was launched.
